One of the things I learned in grad school was to look at every potentially “produced” sculpture as a draft. This allows me to evaluate what does and does not work, which elements tell the story I’m trying to tell, and which detract from it, or get in the way.
And one of the dangers of building anything – a sculpture or a video – is getting too obsessed with the process of building, too wrapped up in the creating. I think this happened yesterday. I’m so caught up in the process of learning to make better video, that I haven’t yet figured out how to stay on target with the message.
Luckily, after 10+ years of making art, I recognize a first draft when I see it.
